XL2000: Invalid Page Fault Saving Shared Workbook That Contains Conditional Formatting

Symptoms

When you save a shared workbook that contains conditional formatting, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:301ff285.
and Microsoft Excel quits.

Cause

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The workbook is shared.

    -and-

  • More that one user has the workbook open.

    -and-

  • One user cuts and pastes a cell that contains a conditional formatting rule, and then saves the file.

    -and-

  • A different user attempts to save the file.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
