Symptoms

The SUMIF and COUNTIF functions return incorrect results when you use them to match strings longer than 255 characters to the string #VALUE!.

Cause

This behavior occurs because SUMIF and COUNTIF worksheet functions can accept strings of no more than 255 characters in their criteria arguments.

Workaround

To work around this issue, avoid using the string #VALUE!, or limit the character string to maximum 255 characters in the function's criteria arguments.
