XL2000: "Name cannot resemble a reference." Error When Changing Reference Style Setting

Symptoms

When you change the reference style setting in Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message:
Name cannot resemble a reference.

Old name: macro name

New name:
NOTE: To change the reference style, use the R1C1 reference style check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box.

Cause

This behavior may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You change the reference style setting.
  • The workbook contains a button that runs a macro.
  • The button passes an argument to the macro.

Workaround

To work around this behavior and change the reference style setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Close. Save changes to your workbook if necessary.
  2. On the File menu, click New.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  4. On the General tab, change the R1C1 reference style check box as appropriate. Click OK.
  5. Reopen the original workbook.
