FIX: Project alerts work incorrectly when you connect to Team Foundation Server 2010 that was upgraded from version 2005 or version 2008 of Team Foundation Server

Symptoms

You connect to a server that is running Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010, and this version was upgraded from Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server or from Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server. Then, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • You use Team Explorer to connect with Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010. When you try to open the Project Alerts dialog box for a project, the integrated development environment (IDE) stops responding (hangs). When the IDE recovers, you receive the following error message:

    Operation has timed out.
  • You install Team Foundation Server 2010 Power Tools, and you use the 2010 version of Team Explorer to connect with Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010. When you try to open the Alerts Explorer dialog box, it takes a long time, and you cannot find the alerts that were created before the server upgrade.

Cause

This problem occurs because of an issue in the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.JobService.Extensions.Core.dll component of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

  • You must install this hotfix on the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 application-tier server.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix. We recommended that you restart the Visual Studio Team Foundation Background Job Agent service after you install the hotfix.

This hotfix package does not replace a previously released hotfix package.

The English (United States) version of this hotfix uses a Microsoft Windows Installer package to install the hotfix. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in the following table. When you view the file information, the date is converted to local time.
