The fax service intermittently crashes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Fax Server role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You run an application or start a service to manage fax jobs on the computer.
In this scenario, the fax service (Fxssvc.exe) intermittently crashes. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Computer: <computer>
Description:
Faulting application fxssvc.exe, version <version>, time stamp <time>, faulting module fxssvc.exe, version <version>, time stamp <time>, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset <offset>, process id <process id>, application start time <time>.

Cause

The issue occurs because of a race condition in the fax service. The fax service does not protect the fax job queue list in all cases. Therefore, a race condition may occur. When the race condition occurs, one thread removes a fax job while another thread tries to access the same fax job. Then, an access violation occurs and causes the fax service to crash.
