A Remote Desktop Services session is disconnected automatically if you apply the "Interactive logon: smart card removal behavior" Group Policy setting in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.
  • You apply the following Group Policy setting to the computer:

    Name:

    Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Polices\Security Options\Interactive logon: Smart card removal behavior

    Value:

    Disconnect if a Remote Desktop Services session

  • You make a Remote Desktop Services session to the computer by using a smart card.
  • You pull the smart card. The Remote Desktop Services session is disconnected, based on the Group Policy setting.
  • You try to make a Remote Desktop Services connection again by using the smart card.
In this scenario, the Remote Desktop Services session is disconnected automatically during reconnection.

Cause

This issue occurs because the smart card removal policy incorrectly disconnects the Remote Desktop Services session even when the smart card is not pulled.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
