On Windows 7, when you install a network WSD printer, and you click the "Next" button while the printer is installing, you get an error message

Symptoms

Consider the following the scenario:

On a system running Windows 7
Open up Devices and Printers
Click "Add a printer" and select "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"
Select a WSD (Web Services on Devices) printer from the list of printers
Click "Next" to start the installation
While the printer is installing, click "Next" again

This may cause an error to appear, "Operation could not be completed (Error 0x00000643).

Cause

This message occurs because when you click the "Next" button the first time, it will start the automation of installing the printer. When it completes, it will do a comparison of a "Before" list of printers with an "After" list of printers to confirm that install was successful.

If the "Next" button is clicked a second time or multiple times, this will restart the installation process again and if the timing it right, this can cause a mismatch of printers in the list and generate an error message.

Resolution

Do not click the "Next" button multiple times when the printer is trying to install.
