You cannot add a webpage to an EFS-encrypted Favorites folder when protected mode is enabled in Internet Explorer 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You encrypt the Favorites folder (%userprofile%/Favorites) by using the Encrypting File System (EFS) feature on a computer that has Windows Internet Explorer 8 installed. Then, you try to add a webpage to the Favorites folder in Internet Explorer 8 when protected mode is enabled. In this scenario, the operation fails, and you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Unable to create '<name of the webpage>'
Unspecified error

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Internet Explorer 8 installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Registry information

After you apply this hotfix, you have to set a registry key to enable the hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl
    NOTE: For 32-bit browsers on 64-bit systems, the registry key is:�
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl
  2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  3. Type FEATURE_BROKER_FAVORITES_FOR_EFS_KB2300135, and then press Enter.
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type iexplore.exe, and then press Enter.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Modify, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
