Symptoms

When you use Windows Explorer to view some shared folders on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the shared type icons for these folders do not appear. Therefore, the shared folders cannot be identified quickly when you view many folders at the same time.

Note To view the sharing status of each folder, use the details panel at the bottom of Windows Explorer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix. After you install this hotfix, users can add a shared files property column to Windows Explorer. The following are the added properties:
ColumnDefinition
SharedShared only returns TRUE when the item is the highest item shared or the item has an additional explicit ACE than the parent.
Sharing statusThe sharing status shows the actual state of an item. The item can be NOT SHARED, SHARED, or PRIVATE.  PRIVATE means that the current user has access to this folder. However, other users do not have access to this PRIVATE folder.
Shared withThis property lists display names. The folder is shared for the users of these display names.

To add the new columns to Windows Explorer, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Open the Choose Details dialog box by using one of the following methods:
    • In the right pane, right-click a column header, and then click More.
    • On the View menu, click Choose details.

  3. In the Choose Details dialog box, select one or more of the following properties:
    • Shared
    • Shared with
    • Sharing status

Note Repeat step 2 and 3 if you change selections in the navigation pane.
