MSTSC.EXE (Remote Desktop) from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows 7 client crashes

Symptoms

When you�try to remote desktop into any Windows 7 Client or Windows Server 2008 R2 machine from a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine the remote desktop application crashes.�

An Event ID 1000 with the following or similar description will be logged in the Application log:�

"Faulting application mstsc.exe, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e02d67, faulting module mstscax.dll, version 6.0.6002.18045, time stamp 0x4a27b8bc, exception code 0x80000002, fault offset 0x000000000034cbe0, process id 0x2088, application start time 0x01cae0ac002aeb90."

Cause

This is a known issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 / Windows 7 based compression.

Resolution

To workaround this issue you should disable compression on the client side as follows:

Add this following line to the default or custom .rdp (for example, default.rdp) file:

compression:i:0
