The search function does not work after you upgrade the search service application in SharePoint Online when using an upgrade command in PowerShell

Symptoms

You perform an upgrade for a search service application in Microsoft SharePoint Online by using the Restore-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication PowerShell command. However, the Restore-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication PowerShell command does not create a partitioned search service application. In this instance, the search function does not work in SharePoint Online after the upgrade.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following hotfix packages:
  • 2276336 Description of the SharePoint Server 2010 hotfix package (osrchwfe-x-none.msp): August 31, 2010
  • 2266423 Description of the SharePoint Foundation 2010 hotfix package (Sts-x-none.msp): August 31, 2010
