Data corruption occurs when you write data to a partition on a disk through an IDE port or a SATA port that uses IDE emulation on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based or a Windows 7-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.
  • You attach a disk that is more than 128 GB to the computer through an IDE port or a SATA port.

Note The SATA port is configured to use IDE emulation.
  • You create a partition on the disk. Some disk offset ranges on the partition are larger than 128 GB.
In this scenario, data corruption occurs on the disk when you try to write data to the partition.

Notes
  • This issue occurs when an ICH8 or ICH9-based source bridge chipset is installed on the affected computer.
  • If you view a trace log that is generated by an IDE bus analyzer or a SATA analyzer, you find that the error occurs when a retried write operation occurs.

Cause

This problem occurs because of an error in the IDE port driver. When the IDE port driver retries a write operation to a disk offset that is larger than 128 GB, the IDE port driver incorrectly truncates the target offset. This causes the related data to be written at the wrong location. Therefore, data corruption occurs.
