The Net Logon service does not start in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows Server 2008 after you restart the computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You join a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 to a domain.
  • You restart the computer.
In this scenario, the Net Logon service randomly does not start and generates the 3056 error code. Because of this problem, other services that rely on the Net Logon service also do not start.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Net Logon service. When the race condition occurs, the Net Logon service tries to open an event. Unfortunately, this event is deleted in another thread. Therefore, the Net Logon service does not start, and this generates the 3056 error code.
