FIX: Error message when you build a Visual Studio 2010 setup project: "Unable to update the dependencies of the project"

Symptoms

You create a Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 setup project (.vdproj) that references valid third-party assemblies as dependencies. However, when you use the devenv.com command to build the project, you receive the following error message:

ERROR: Unable to update the dependencies of the project. The dependencies for the object ‘assembly_name’ cannot be determined."

Note You do not encounter the problem when you use earlier versions of Visual Studio.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Visual Studio 2010 has changed how dependency refreshment operates.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
