A Wmiprvse.exe process crashes in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you use the WMI interface to query the hardware status on a computer that supports the IPMI standard

Symptoms

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. The computer supports the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard.
  • You use the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface to query the hardware status on the computer.
In this scenario, a Wmiprvse.exe process may crash. Additionally, an event ID 1000 is added to the Application event log. The description of the event resembles the following:

Cause

This problem occurs because the Ipmiprv.dll module leads the Wmiprvse.exe process to crash. This behavior depends on certain hardware sensor types when the sensor is enumerated.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
