A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 stops responding randomly

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 with System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) and a large number of GPOs (Group Policies) running a service that calls for Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) starts and then hangs after a short time and becomes unresponsive. The computer will return Pings but all other applications or services that are running on the computer stop working. Additionally, you cannot log on to the computer by using the remote desktop connection utility.

Cause

This issue occurs because of heavy group policy use and the presence of SCOM causing a deadlock condition between the Lsass.exe process, the Redirected Drive Buffering Subsystem (Rdbss.sys) driver, and the Winsock kernel.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page.
