Cannot open East Asian Access 97 database in Access 2000

Symptoms

When you try to convert a database that was created in an East Asian version of Access 97, such as a Japanese or a Chinese database, in the U.S. English version of Access 2000, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'objectname'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.

NOTE: "objectname" appears in East Asian characters. When you click OK, you receive the following error message:

The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this database.

To convert or enable a database, ensure the following:
* You must join the workgroup that defines the user accounts used to access the database.
* Your user account must have Open/Run and Open Exclusive permissions for the database object.
* Your user account must have Modify Design or Administer permissions for all tables in the database, or it must be the owner of all tables in the database.
* Your user account must have Read Design permission for all objects in the database.
* Request the other users close the database.

Cause

Because you are using Access 2000 to open a database that is in the format of an earlier version of Access, the open or convert process must first be implemented. When both English and East Asian files and file systems are involved, this becomes an operating system and sort order issue. Because not all languages under \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office are installed, the open or convert process cannot be performed successfully.

Resolution

If you want to open East Asian Access files on a different language system, you must first install the operating system language support for that language. You can only do this on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000 because installable East Asian support packs with the language support files are not available for Microsoft Window 95 or Microsoft Windows 98.

Next, you must install the East Asian language support files from the Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 installation CDs. Also include the necessary sorting language support files from Microsoft Office or Access 2000. The operating system language and the database language must be the same.

Then, convert the Access 97 East Asian database to an Access 2000 database on the same East Asian platform. You can then open the new Access 2000 database in a U.S. English version of Access 2000.
