You cannot generate a dump file when you use a storport virtual miniport driver in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

 

Consider the following scenario: 

  •  You have a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is configured to start by using a Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) device.
  • The FCoE adapter that is used to connect to the FCoE device supports crash dump file generation.
  • The system is configured to generate a crash dump file when a fatal system error occurs.
  •  A fatal system error occurs on the system.

 In this scenario, the crash dump file is not generated as expected.

Cause

Windows Server 2003 does not support the generation of crash dump files by the storport virtual miniport. In the case of certain virtual miniports (such as FCoE), an additional hotfix is required so that the Windows kernel returns the dump file stack in the correct format.
