You cannot uninstall the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on in Mozilla Firefox after you install the recent update for Microsoft Search Enhancement Pack from Microsoft Update


Symptoms

After you install the recent update for Microsoft Search Enhancement Pack from Microsoft Update, you notice that the update installs the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on in Mozilla Firefox. You cannot uninstall this add-on from the Firefox add-ons manager.

Microsoft Update installs this update if you have installed the Windows Live Toolbar or the MSN Toolbar 3.x.

Cause

Microsoft Search Enhancement Pack is a component that enables search features in the Windows Live Toolbar, in the MSN Toolbar and in the Bing Bar. The Bing Bar and the MSN Toolbar 4.x supports Internet Explorer and Firefox. The Windows Live Toolbar and the MSN Toolbar 3.x support Internet Explorer only. In order to support the Bing bar and the MSN Toolbar 4.x, the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on cannot be uninstalled in the Firefox add-ons manager.

Workaround

Important If you have installed the Bing Bar or the MSN Toolbar 4.x, you should not uninstall the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on in Firefox because it is a required component.

If you have installed the Windows Live Toolbar or the MSN Toolbar 3.x, you can follow these steps to uninstall the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on in Firefox:
  1. Close all running instances of Firefox.
  2. If you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, open the following folder:
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper\firefoxextension
    If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, open the following folder:
    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper\firefoxextension
  3. Delete the SearchHelperExtension folder.
  4. Start Firefox.
  5. In Firefox, click Add-ons on the Tools menu.
  6. In the Add-ons dialog box, verify that the Search Helper Extension 1.0 add-on is not there.
