FP2000: FrontPage 2000 Not Registered as the Default HTML Editor

Symptoms

When you right-click a web document in Windows Explorer and click edit, a Web or text editor other than FrontPage 2000 may be started.

Cause

This problem may occur in one of the following conditions:
  • When you install Microsoft FrontPage 2000, it is registered as the default Web document editor. However, you may have installed another HTML editor prior to installing FrontPage 2000.
  • Another Microsoft program, such as FrontPage Express or Windows Notepad, may be registered as the default HTML editor in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.

Resolution

To resolve the problem that is created by the first scenario, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Option.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Click to select the "Check if FrontPage is the default editor for pages" check box.
  5. Quit and restart FrontPage 2000.
  6. FrontPage 2000 will display a dialog box prompting you to select it as the default Web page editor.
  7. Click Yes.
To resolve the second scenario do the following:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Programs tab.
  4. In the HTML Editor list, click Microsoft FrontPage.
  5. Click OK.
