Error message when you try to open a project in SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2: "The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference"


Symptoms

When you use SQL Server Management Studio or Windows Explorer to open a recent project in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2, you receive the following error message:

Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0X80040154(REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))
The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)

Cause

This problem may occur when you run a side-by-side installation of both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition or a side-by-side installation of both SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition .
