The import process for a metadata file that contains an empty "Reference URI" reference tag fails in AD FS 2.0 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You deploy Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0 on the computer.
  • You try to import a metadata file. The metadata file contains an XML digital signature that has an empty reference tag. For example, the metadata file contains the following reference tag:
    <ds:Reference URI="">
In this scenario, the import process fails, and you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error message: ID6008: Cannot resolve the " URI in the signature to compute the digest

Cause

This issue occurs because an empty reference for Reference URI�in the signature is not allowed.

Resolution

Hotfix information
