Symptoms

When you open a Microsoft Excel worksheet that contains equations or functions, Excel automatically recalculates the equations and functions. Versions of Excel earlier than Excel 2000 do not recalculate equations automatically when the worksheet opens.

If the worksheet contains an equation with a volatile function, such as the following
=Now()
data can be changed and unintended results can occur.

Cause

This behavior can occur when the Calculation option is set to Automatic.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
1.In Excel, on the Tools menu, click Options.
2.Click the Calculation tab.
3.Under Calculation, click Manual.
4.Click to clear the Recalculate before save check box if you want no automatic recalculations at all.

Note the location of the Calc Now button. Equations are now recalculated only when you force a recalculation by pressing F9 or by clicking Calc Now.
