XL2000: Error During Save Identifies Incorrect Cell for Function

When you save a workbook in an older file format you may receive the following error message, which incorrectly identifies the cell in which a function resides: where defined name is the last defined name, alphabetically, in your workbook.

If you click Yes the error message reappears, but defined name is replaced with a cell reference.

This error message occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

• There are one or more defined names in the workbook.
  
  -and-
  
  
• There are one or more functions in the workbook that cannot be saved in the older file format.
  
  -and-
  
  
• You save your workbook in an earlier version file format, for example, as a Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook.
  

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Excel 2000 introduces new spreadsheet functions that are not supported in Microsoft Excel 95 for Windows or Microsoft Excel, version 5.0. These functions include the following:
In this situation, Excel calculates the function before saving the file and replaces the formula with the resulting value. However, the HYPERLINK function is resolved to the value =#N/A.
