To correct this problem, add the EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences registry entry to the Excel Options subkey. To add this new registry entry:
  1. On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and press RETURN to start Registry Editor.
  2. In the left pane of Registry Editor, locate and select the following subkey (folder):
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\Options
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences, and then press ENTER.
  5. Double-click the EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences icon.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
To update the embedded Excel object, double-click the worksheet object. When the following dialog box appears, click Yes.
