On Microsoft Windows Server 2003, I/O may fail when path failover occurs with a multipath connection to the storage

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

You have a system running Windows Server 2003 SP2.
This system is connected to external storage array using multipath (MPIO) with 2 paths.
You are running a version of storport.sys that is earlier than 5.2.3790.4485.
While I/O is running to the storage array, the path that is servicing the I/O fails or becomes disconnected.

In this scenrio, you have a chance that I/O will get stuck, causing failover to not succeed. If the path isn't reconnected, this I/O will eventually fail.
