Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, if you open a dependent document linked to a source document, you may receive the following error message:
#REF!

Cause

This behavior occurs when the source document is renamed after the link to it is created in the dependent document.

More information

This behavior is not the same as in the earlier versions of Excel; in versions earlier than Excel 5.0, a Change Links dialog box is displayed regardless of which document is opened first. Excel versions 5.0 and later view worksheets as documents within a workbook and do not display an alert message when a worksheet is not found.
