In Microsoft Excel 2000, you can use Microsoft Map to limit the states or countries shown on a map to a given list. By default, Microsoft Map includes all the states or countries when it draws a map.
Display Specific States and Nations
To limit the states or countries that Microsoft Map displays, follow these steps:
- Create a data map, and then select the area of map to be shown.
For example, for a map of the United States, display the toolbar that contains the Map button, click Map, and then use the pointer to draw a map box. In the Unable to Create Map dialog box, double-click United States (AK & HI Inset), and then click OK.
- Create a column of geographic data that uses the state or country names that you want, or use their standard abbreviations.
For this example, type the following:
- Select the map. On the Edit menu, point to Microsoft Map Object, and then click Edit.
- On the Insert menu, click Data. Highlight the range of data on the worksheet that contains the states or countries that you want to show. In this example, select A1:A3.
The corresponding states are shaded gray on the map.
- On the Map menu, click Features to display the Map Features dialog box.
- Click to clear the Visible check box for the map that you are using, and then click OK. In this example, click United States (AK & HI Inset)
All non-shaded states and unused boundaries disappear.
How to Change the Default Shading Options
The default shading color for a state or country is based on a count of
the number of entries for each state or country name. To change the color, follow these steps:
- If the Microsoft Map Control window is not visible, click Microsoft Map Control on the View menu.
- On the Map menu, click Value Shading Options.
- In the Format Properties dialog box, select the color that you want in the Color list.
- To make all states the same color, change the number in the Number of value ranges box to 1, and then click OK.
