Visual Basic Code Example

  1. In a new workbook, insert a module, and enter the following code:
       Sub loopyarray()

       Dim filenames As Variant

       ' set the array to a variable and the True is for multi-select
       filenames = Application.GetOpenFilename(, , , , True)

          counter = 1

          ' ubound determines how many items in the array
          While counter <= UBound(filenames)

             'Opens the selected files
             Workbooks.Open filenames(counter)

             ' displays file name in a message box
             MsgBox filenames(counter)

             'increment counter
             counter = counter + 1

          Wend
       End Sub

  2. Run the loopyarray macro.
  3. In the Open dialog box, select multiple files to open by holding down CTRL as you click each file name.
  4. Click Open.
As the macro opens each of the selected files, it displays a message box stating the path and file name of each file.
