Symptoms

When you click OK in the Conditional Formatting dialog box, you may receive the following error message:
You may not use references to other worksheets or workbooks for Conditional Formatting criteria.

Cause

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You click Formula Is in the leftmost list in the Conditional Formatting dialog box.

    -and-
  • You attempt to use a function that is provided by an add-in.

    NOTE: This includes add-ins that are included with Microsoft Excel, such as the Analysis ToolPak add-in.

    -or-
  • You attempt to use a custom function that is in another workbook.
