Symptoms

When you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macro that applies diagonal cell borders to a workbook, the borders may not be correctly applied.

For example, the following macro includes code to apply diagonal cell borders, but no borders are applied when you run the macro:
Sub format_borders1()

   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlLeft)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlRight)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With

   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlDiagonalDown)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlDiagonalUp)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
End Sub

Cause

This behavior occurs when the macro applies the left or right borders before it applies the diagonal cell borders.

Workaround

Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied. This includes, but is not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. This article assumes that you are familiar with the programming language that is being demonstrated and with the tools that are used to create and to debug procedures. Microsoft support engineers can help explain the functionality of a particular procedure, but they will not modify these examples to provide added functionality or construct procedures to meet your specific requirements. To work around this behavior, rearrange the macro code that applies the left or right borders so that it runs after the code that applies the diagonal cell borders, for example:
Sub format_borders2()
   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlDiagonalDown)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlDiagonalUp)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With

   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlLeft)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
   With ActiveWorkbook.Styles("Normal").Borders(xlRight)
     .LineStyle = xlContinuous
     .ColorIndex = xlAutomatic
   End With
End Sub

Compare this macro to the macro in the "Symptoms" section. Note that the code that applies the diagonal borders was moved to run before the code that applies the left and right borders.
