"Unable to log you on because your profile could not be loaded, please contact your administrator" error when you try to log on to a computer in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

You cannot log on to a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Unable to log you on because your profile could not be loaded, please contact your administrator.
Also, the following event is logged in the event log:
Event 1502

Description:
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
