XL2000: Published Chart Displays "Series" as Name in Legend

When you publish a chart as a Web page with interactivity, the series name in the legend appears as Series instead of Series1. If your chart contains multiple series, each series appears with the same name of Series instead of Series1, Series2, and so on.

This problem occurs when you do the following:

�	You publish a chart or a worksheet containing a chart to a Web page. -and-
�	You choose to add interactivity when publishing the Web page. -and-
�	Your series uses the default name(s) of Series1, Series2, and so on.

To work around this problem, when you publish an interactive chart from Microsoft Excel, name your series when you first create the chart, or rename the series from the Chart menu for an existing chart.

To name your series when creating the chart, follow these steps:

1.	Select your source data and start the Chart Wizard.
2.	In step 2 of the wizard, click the Series tab.
3.	In the Series box, click Series1 and type a name in the Name box.
4.	Repeat step 3 for all remaining series, and then click Finish.

To rename your series for an existing chart, follow these steps:

1.	Select the chart.
2.	On the Chart menu, click Source Data. Then, click the Series tab.
3.	In the Series box, click Series1 and type a name in the Name box.
4.	Repeat step 3 for all remaining series, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

When creating a chart whose source range does not include labels, Microsoft Excel automatically labels the series as Series. If you have more than one series, Excel enumerates them as Series1, Series2, and so on. However, if you publish an Excel chart with the generic series labels as an interactive Web page, the resulting chart component does not maintain the enumeration when you open it in the browser. The labels appear in the chart legend as Series. The Microsoft Office Chart Component does, however, maintain the series order and places the appropriately colored markers next to the individual legend items.

This problem does not occur when you publish the chart as a static Web page (without interactivity).
