The keys that you type and any mouse movement do not work on the VM when you access the VM in Internet Explorer 8 by using the Terminal Services ActiveX control in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a website that contains a Terminal Services ActiveX control. The Terminal Services ActiveX control is configured to connect to the console of a virtual machine (VM).
  • You access the VM in the Terminal Services ActiveX control by using Internet Explorer 8 from a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
In this scenario, the keys that you type and any mouse movement do not work on the VM.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition in Mstscax.dll. Because the Terminal Services ActiveX control is hosted in Internet Explorer 8, the ActiveX control can forward mouse and keyboard actions only when the ActiveX control has the focus. However, the ActiveX container window does not set the focus at the correct moment. Therefore, the mouse and keyboard actions are not forwarded to the server correctly.
