An application which calls the ReadFile function on a named pipe server may stop responding when you run the application on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You have an application that calls the ReadFile function on a named pipe server. You run this application on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, the application thread may stop responding on the ReadFile function.

This problem occurs if the named pipe server becomes unavailable. For example, the named pipe server crashes or loses network connectivity.

Note In earlier versions of the Microsoft operating system, the ReadFile call returns error code 64. This means that the network path is no longer available.

Cause

In a Windows operating system, Server Message Block (SMB) implement named pipe related exchanges. These exchanges never times out or expires. Earlier versions of the Windows operating system can detect if the named pipe server becomes unavailable.. It does this by periodically sending SMB echo requests to the named pipe server and closes the connection when the named pipe server does not reply to the SMB echo requests. However, the SMB echo feature is not implemented in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2. Therefore, the function permanently hangs.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you have to set the following registry key.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
  1. Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click OK .
  2. Locate and then click the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
  3. Right-click Parameters , point to New , and then click DWORD Value .
  4. Type TcpKeepAliveTimeout, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
  5. Right-click TcpKeepAliveTimeout , and then click Modify .
  6. In the Value data box, type 60, and then click OK .

This value indicates the time interval (in seconds) to send Keepalives on an idle connection. We recommend that you set this value to 60 seconds. However, you can reduce or increase this time-out value according to your requirement.

Note Windows Server 2003 client sends SMB echo at an interval of 30 seconds. Therefore, we do not recommend that you to set this value to below 30 seconds as it may increase bandwidth usage.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
