View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 4.5 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
  • You try to install a Windows Installer package on this computer.

Disk full: Out of disk space -- Volume: <volume>; required space: <number> KB; available space: 0 KB. Free some disk space and retry.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows Installer 4.5 incorrectly checks the installation source drive, the CD drive, the DVD drive, or the virtual optical drive that is amounted .ISO image and reports that there is no available memory. However, the drive should not be checked because this drive is not the destination drive.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. Workaround

Workaround for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008

Before you install this hotfix, try to resolve this issue by using the following workaround.

To work around this issue, do the following:
  1. Contact the product vendor to check whether the data of the installation media can be copied to a hard disk in a new folder temporarily.
  2. Copy the data of the installation media to a hard disk in a new folder. If there are multiple CDs or DVDs, copy each to the same new folder.
  3. Run the "bootstrapper" file for the installation from the root of this new folder.

Note The "bootstrapper" file usually has the Setup.exe file name.
