Microsoft Services for NFS does not support NTFS volume mount points

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

Assume that you have installed Microsoft Services for NFS on a Windows Server-based computer to provide NFS access to UNIX-based NFS clients. You also have NTFS volume mount points on this server.

In this situation, you cannot share the NTFS volume mount points over NFS. Additionally, when you export the parent folder of the NTFS mount points, the NFS clients cannot see the contents of the NTFS volume mount points.

Cause

This issue occurs because the current implementation of Microsoft Services for NFS does not support NTFS mount points.

More Information

This limitation of Microsoft Services for NFS also applies to the cluster support that is built into Microsoft Services for NFS.

Additionally, the following conditions apply to a Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 cluster instance that uses NFS 4.1:
  • Volume mount points are supported.
  • Direct NFS export of the volume mount points folder is not supported.
For example, you have the following structure:
  • A regular folder, c:\samplefolder
  • A subfolder, c:\samplefolder\subfolder, that can be VMP-mounted
In this example, you can export c:\samplefolder as an NFS share. However, you cannot directly export c:\samplefolder\subfolder as an NFS share.

Note These conditions apply only to NFS 4.1, which was introduced with Windows Server 2012. These conditions do not affect previous versions of NFS.
