Visual Studio 2009 Service Pack 1 Installation Fails on Wwindows XP SP3 with Update 'Hotfix for Office (KB950278)' could not be installed. Error code 1603

Symptoms

While trying to install service pack 1 for visual studio 2008, you get the following error message in the MSI logs in %temp% (user temporary) folder

SI (s) (A4:50) [13:42:43:865]: Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - Update 'Hotfix for Office (KB950278)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\DOCUME~1\RBONDAR\LOCALS~1\Temp\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1_20100428_134034419-Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007-MSP0.txt.

Cause

This issue happens due to conflict with already installed Visual Web Developer

Resolution

STEPS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE
1) Rename the following Registry keys by prefix or suffixing it with some name

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\00002109120000000000000000F01FEC


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\00002109120000000000000000F01FEC


2) Rename the folder VWD to some other name from the following path

  “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD”  


3) Install SP1 for Visual Studio 2008.

4) Restore the names to the above registries and folder.
