Stop Error on Windows Server 2008 During Upgrade of FCoE Adapter Driver

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario.  Windows Server 2008 is booted from a network storage device using a Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) adapter.  An upgrade is initiated on the FCoE adapter driver.  During the driver upgrade Windows shows a stop error as it has lost access to the system paging path.

Common stop errors for this scenario are:

0x00000077 (KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR)

0x0000007A (KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR)

Cause

During the driver upgrade, the FCoE protocol drivers are unbound from NDIS miniport.  This results in a loss of connectivity to the network storage boot device.

Resolution

To prevent this issue, independent hardware vendors should add their FCoE protocol drivers to the following registry key during driver installation.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\IscsiSupportedProtocols

NOTE: The data in this key is a string of comma separated values.  Do not remove any of the default values in this key.
