SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 are not supported on some Windows Versions

Summary

SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 are not supported on certain version of Windows. However, the setup for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 may allow you to install SQL Server on these unsupported versions.

The following is a summary for the unsupported Windows Versions for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2:

SQL Server 2008 is not supported on:

  • Any version of Windows XP less than Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Any version of Windows Server 2003 less than Windows Server 2003 SP2

SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported on:

  • Any version of Windows XP x86 less than Windows XP x86 Service Pack 3
  • Any version of Windows XP x64 less than Windows XP x64 Service Pack 2
  • Any version of Windows Server 2003 less than Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
  • Any version of Windows Server 2008 less than Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
  • Any version of Windows Vista less than Windows Vista Service Pack 2

The SQL Server 2008 R2 Best Practice Analyzer (SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA) provides a rule to detect these unsupported Windows Versions. The SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA supports both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. If you run the BPA tool and encounter an Error with the title of Setup - Unsupported Operating System Version Detected, then your SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 installation is installed on one of these unsupported Windows Versions.
