A TIFF file appears corrupted when opened by Windows 7 Photo Viewer or Microsoft Paint

Symptoms

When opening .TIFF files using Photo Viewer or Microsoft Paint from Windows 7, you may see horizontal black lines running through the image. Opening the image in other applications does not display horizontal black lines running through the image however, saving the image using Photo Viewer or Microsoft Paint from Windows 7 will save the horizontal black lines permanently to the image.

Cause

This is a known issue in Microsoft Windows 7 Photo Viewer and Microsoft Paint.

Resolution

To work around this issue, use another Fax Viewer or graphics application like Microsoft Office 2007 Picture Manager to view .TIFF images.
