Upsizing Wizard in Access 2002, Access 2003 or Access 2007 database results in message when attempting to upsize to SQL Server 2008

When you use the Upsizing Wizard to attempt to create a new database on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 from Microsoft Office Access 2002, Microsoft Office Access 2003, sor Microsoft Office Access 2007 you will receive one of the following messages:

Message 1

The Upsizing Wizard only works with Microsoft SQL Server (Versions 6.50 SP5 or higher). Please Log into a SQL Server data source.

Message 2

The Upsizing Wizard does not work with the version of Microsoft SQL Server to which your Access project is connected. See the Microsoft Office Update Web site for the latest information and downloads.

Microsoft Office Access 2002, 2003, 2007 and earlier versions were released before Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Those versions were not designed to support the use of the Upsizing Wizard in SQL Server 2008. 

Method 1

Upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. Changes were made in Microsoft SQL Server R2 that allow upsizing Access databases.

Method 2

Create a new database in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and use the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard to import the Microsoft Access tables into the new SQL Server Database.

Microsoft Office Access 2002, 2003, and 2007 were released before Microsoft SQL Server 2008 was designed. Therefore, Office Access 2002, 2003 and Access 2007 were not designed to support the use of graphical design tools when an Access project is connected to a SQL Server 2008 database. Steps to reproduce

1. In Microsoft Access 2003, create the Nothwind database from the help menu.
2. On the Database Tools tab click SQL Server.
3. Select Create new database and click Next
4. Enter the name of your Microsoft SQL Server 2008
5. Select Use Trusted Connection or enter your Login ID and Password
6. Enter a name for the database, for instance "SQL Assets Template"
7. Click Next
