On Windows 7, if you remove a write-protected SD card without using Safe Removal and turn off the write protection setting, you still cannot save to the SD card


Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a write-protected SD card with write protection turned on.
  • You remove the SD card without using Safe Removal and turn off the write protection.
  • After you turn off write protection, you reinsert the SD card but you still cannot save to it.

Cause

If you remove a write-protected SD card without Safe Removal, the operating system may not always recognize write protection has been turned off.

Resolution

Re-insert the card and it will recognize the change and work as expected.

More Information

You should always use Safe Removal to remove the card when changing write protect status.  This will ensure that the operating system recognizes that write protection has been turned off when you reinsert the card.
