The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) may log Event IDs 8193 and 12289 when importing a transportable shadow-copy to a server having a read-only volume

Summary

After successfully importing a transportable shadow-copy to another server that has a read-only volume using a 3rd party vendor's Storage Backup application, you may find from source VSS in your Application Event Log, the following error level events:

Event ID 8193, VSS - Volume Shadow Copy Service Error: Unexpected error calling routine IOCTL_DSIK_GET_DRIVE_LAYOUT_EX

Event ID 12289, VSS - Volume Shadow Copy Service Error: Unexpected error DeviceIOControl

If the import of the transportable shadow-copy was logged as successful in the your 3rd party Storage Backup application, you may safely ignore these errors. VSS logged these errors when internal read-only flags were encountered while building a LUN for the shadow-copy, however, your application continued successfully to complete mounting the volume.
