You cannot print or print preview Web pages in Internet Explorer 8

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Using Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008, you attempt to print a web page.  However, the web page does not print and the Print dialog disappears.  Alternately, if you view the Print Preview for the web page, the Print Preview page may be blank except for the page number in the header and a file path and date in the footer. In this scenario, the file path may resemble the following:

File://C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\RU4GX5A5.htm

Cause

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • Protected Mode is enabled for the Internet security zone the web page resides in.
  • The AppData portion of the user profile is redirected to a network location.
  • The homepage is set to a website that belongs to a security zone where Protected Mode is disabled (for example, the Local Intranet or Trusted sites zone).

If all the above conditions are met, the Low folder under the %TEMP% location is not created correctly, causing printing to fail. However, web pages that belong to security zones where Protected Mode is disabled print correctly.

Resolution

To work around this problem, create the Low folder under %TEMP% with a login script, by using the following commands:

Mkdir %TEMP%\Low
Icacls %TEMP%\Low /setintegritylevel Low
