Internet Explorer and the Internet Explorer Administration Kit include
options for the caching of temporary Internet files. These options can be
useful when you are using roaming user profiles on a network. If you do
not use these options, all temporary Internet files are copied to the
user's profile folder when he or she logs off. The temporary Internet
files are then copied back to the local computer the next time the user
logs on. This can be time consuming and can use a lot of server space.
Caching Options
Internet Explorer:
You can use the "Delete saved pages when browser closed" option in
Internet Explorer to delete all cached Internet files when a user quits
Internet Explorer. This option does not delete cookie information. Cookie
information (which is usually small) is copied when the profile is
saved. To use this option, follow these steps:
- In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View (or Tools)
menu.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Security, click the "Delete saved pages when browser closed" or
"Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" check
box to select it.
- Click OK.
Internet Explorer Administration Kit:
You can set an install option in the Internet Explorer Administration Kit
(IEAK) wizard when you are creating a custom installation of Internet
Explorer to set the "Delete saved pages when browser closed" or "Empty
Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" option
automatically. You can set this option when the IEAK wizard reaches the
System Policies And Restrictions window. Click Internet Settings, and then
click Advanced Settings. Select the "Delete saved pages when browser is
closed" or "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed"
option.
You can also use Profile Manager (installed with the IEAK) to change two
settings that affect temporary Internet files. These options are:
- Under User Profiles under System Policies And Restrictions, you can
clear the Disable Roaming Cache option. This actually enables the roaming cache.
- Under Advanced Settings under Internet Settings, you can select the
"Delete saved paged when browser closed" or "Empty Temporary Internet
Files folder when browser is closed" option.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 provides a feature to prohibit the
Temporary Internet Files folder, in addition to other folders, from being
replicated back to the server with roaming profiles. For additional
