Problem When You Right-Click a Screen Saver to Install It

Symptoms

When you right-click a screen saver (.scr) file, click Install, and then click Yes when you are prompted to install the screen saver, you may receive the following error message:
RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32 at 0217:7096E8FE.

Cause

This behavior can occur if the Windows Desktop Update component is installed.

Resolution

To work around this problem, use Display properties to select the screen saver. To do so, follow these steps:
1.If the .scr file is not already located in the Windows\System folder, move it to the Windows\System folder. For information about how to move a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type moving, and then double-click the "Moving files, folders" topic.
2.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3.Double-click Display.
4.Click the Screen Saver tab, click the screen saver in the Screen Saver box, and then click OK.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01, and Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 for Windows 95.
