System32 Folder Opens When Windows NT Starts

Symptoms

After you install Internet Explorer, restart your computer, and then log on to Windows NT 4.0, the System32 folder may be opened on your desktop instead of the "Welcome - Microsoft Internet Explorer" screen. In addition, the System32 folder may be opened when you attempt to open a channel. In both cases, the following message is displayed in Event Viewer:
Event ID 10010
The server {0002df01-0000-0000-c000-00000000046} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Resolution

This problem no longer occurs in Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1, please visit the following Microsoft Web site: To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

  • Uninstall the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • When the Begin Logon dialog box appears, wait 30 seconds to 1 minute before you log on to Windows NT 4.0.
