What is Best Practices Analyzer for the File Services role?
On a computer that has the File Services role installed, Best Practices Analyzer scans the computer to determine whether the File Services role is installed and configured correctly. Additionally, Best Practices Analyzer scans one or more of the following local services and role services:
- DFS Namespaces
- DFS Replication
- File Server Resource Manager
- Services for Network File System
- The Server service
Note The Server service processes any Server Message Block (SMB) request.
Important The scan operation of Best Practices Analyzer does not change any system configurations.
Best Practices Analyzer generates a report of the scan results. If any problems are identified, they are displayed in the report as a list of issues that you can sort by severity. The report also contains recommendations together with links to the instructions that describe how to resolve these issues.

No prerequisites are required to install this update. After you install this update, the File Services role component is updated regardless of whether you have installed the File Services role or not. This behavior makes sure that you have the same experience when you use Best Practices Analyzer for the File Services role even if you install the role later.
How to install the File Services role
You must correctly install the File Services role to make sure that Best Practices Analyzer is enabled for the File Services role. One of the methods is to install the File Services role by using Server Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
- In Server Manager, right-click Roles, and then click Add Roles to start the Add Roles Wizard.
- On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
- On the Server Roles page, click to select the File Services check box, and then click Next.
- On the File Services page, click Next.
- On the Select Role Services page, click Next.
- On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.
Note If a shared folder exists on the computer before the File Services role is installed, Server Manager shows that the File Services role is already installed. In this case, Best Practices Analyzer for the File Services role is not available. To work around this issue, perform any one of the following tasks:
- Remove all existing shared folders, and then install the File Services role.
- Install any role service of the File Services role by using Server Manager.
How to remove the File Services role
To remove the File Services role, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
- In Server Manager, right-click Roles, and then click Remove Roles to start the Remove Roles Wizard.
- On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
- On the Remove Server Roles page, click to clear the File Services check box, and then click Next.
- On the Confirm Removal Selections page, click Remove.
