You may receive an error message when you try to access a multilevel entry in an MMC by using the Taskpad view on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a customized Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that is based on the Active Directory Users and Computers (Dsa.msc) console.
  • In the customized console, you create a Taskpad view, and then you create a new task that opens an entry through multiple levels.
  • You open the customized console, and then you click the new task.
In this scenario, you receive one of the following error messages:

Error 1
MMC cannot complete the task because an error occurred

Error 2
The specified action could not be completed

In addition, the number of times that you receive the error message equals the number of levels of the target entry. For example, if you use a task in the Taskpad view to open Domain\ Level1 \ Level2 \ Level3 , you may receive an error message three times before the task succeeds.

Note This problem does not occur if the multilevel entry is already expanded before you open the task.
